Day 1 Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Nyungwe National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by the Primate Safaris team for a quick briefing on your upcoming adventure. Then, enjoy a scenic 8-hour drive through the Rwandan countryside, passing the charming city of Butare. Along the way, visit the historic Kings Palace in Nyanza, once the seat of the Rwandan monarchy, followed by the Butare National Museum, which holds the finest ethnographic collection in East Africa. After lunch at Ibis Hotel in Butare, continue to Nyungwe National Park, where you will check in at the luxurious One & Only Nyungwe House for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2 Nyungwe Forest – Chimpanzee Trek and Canopy Walk

Start your day early with breakfast, followed by a transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park for a memorable chimpanzee trek. These great apes, closely related to humans, roam freely in the park’s rich biodiversity. During your hike, you may also encounter other primates. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before an exhilarating canopy walk in the afternoon. This suspended bridge, 70 meters above the forest floor, offers breathtaking views of Nyungwe’s lush canopy.

Day 3 Nyungwe Forest – Colobus Monkey Trek and Transfer to Lake Kivu

Another early breakfast awaits before a trek into Nyungwe Forest to observe the large troops of black-and-white Angolan Colobus monkeys, one of the largest in Africa, with numbers ranging between 350-400 individuals. Afterward, enjoy lunch at the lodge and embark on a scenic 4-hour drive to the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu. Arriving in Gisenyi, check in to the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 Gisenyi to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely morning at Lake Kivu before transferring to Volcanoes National Park, located in the northern reaches of Rwanda. This scenic drive takes approximately one hour, offering beautiful vistas along the way. Upon arrival, check in to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, a luxurious retreat near the park, for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5 Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Prepare for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life with an early breakfast, followed by a transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on mountain gorilla trekking. Your trek through the dense volcanic forests may take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you’ll have an hour to observe and photograph these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Afterward, return to the lodge for a refreshing lunch and then begin your 3-hour drive back to Kigali.

Day 6 Departure from Kigali

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel before a transfer to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight, reflecting on the profound memories of your Rwandan adventure.
