This iconic trekking experience follows the renowned Machame Route, also known as the Whisky Route, offering an adventurous ascent through lush rainforests, dramatic moorlands, and glaciated peaks to the roof of Africa. A true test of endurance, this journey promises awe-inspiring landscapes and unmatched camaraderie for the fit and adventurous.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our representative will transfer you to Springlands Hotel in Moshi, where you’ll spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the climb ahead.
Distance & Time: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi (~40 km, 1 hour)
Overnight: Springlands Hotel (Bed & Breakfast)
Begin your day with a 45-minute drive from Moshi to Machame Park Gate (1,800 m). After registration, the ascent starts through dense rainforest trails, which may become muddy and slippery. By evening, you’ll reach Machame Camp (3,010 m), where porters will prepare your tent and a warm meal.
Distance & Time: Moshi to Machame Gate (~28 km, 45 minutes); Hike to Machame Camp (~11 km, 6 hours)
Overnight: Machame Camp (Full Board - LDBB)
After breakfast, ascend through moorland terrain to the Shira Plateau. The journey involves a steady climb to 3,840 m, offering spectacular views of Kibo’s western glaciers. Shira Camp’s exposed location ensures cold nights, so prepare for freezing temperatures.
Hike: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (~5 km, 4–5 hours)
Overnight: Shira Camp (LDBB)
Trek into a semi-desert landscape, reaching Lava Tower (4,630 m), the highest point of the day. After lunch, descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) for acclimatization. This challenging day aids altitude adaptation and offers stunning photo opportunities.
Hike: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower (~11 km, 7–8 hours)
Overnight: Barranco Camp (LDBB)
Tackle the iconic Barranco Wall before continuing to Karanga Camp (4,035 m). This short but technical trek involves ascents and descents, providing an excellent acclimatization opportunity.
Hike: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (~5 km, 5 hours)
Overnight: Karanga Camp (LDBB)
Ascend to Barafu Camp (4,640 m), the base for your summit attempt. With stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, this exposed camp offers little respite from the wind. Prepare your gear and rest for the final ascent.
Hike: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (~5 km, 5 hours)
Overnight: Barafu Camp (LDBB)
Embark on the summit attempt at midnight, reaching Stella Point (5,685 m) for a breathtaking sunrise. After a further 2-hour trek, stand at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), Africa’s highest point. Descend to Mweka Camp (3,090 m) for a well-earned rest.
Hike: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and down to Mweka Camp (~17 km, 15+ hours)
Overnight: Mweka Camp (LDBB)
Descend through lush forests to Mweka Gate (1,650 m), where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Drive back to Moshi for a hot shower, lunch, and celebration of your accomplishment.
Distance & Time: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (~10 km, 4–5 hours); Mweka Gate to Moshi (~30 km, 1 hour)
Overnight: Springlands Hotel (Bed & Breakfast)
After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey, carrying unforgettable memories of this incredible adventure.
